I was sitting in a coffee shop in downtown Taipei one sunny afternoon when someone asked me what I do for a living.
"I'm a certified Wellness Consultant, I founded a wellness service company that is dedicated to help individuals find their own well being by using science-based wellness products and services."
"Ok... but what is wellness anyways? Is that like a spa?"
What is wellness, the act of being well? Google it and the answer you’d get would probably range from the adoption of a mostly plant-based diet (possibly gluten-free) to a very active gym membership subscription, or as my mother calls it, the “kale and sweat” method. Truth be told, we probably all know a friend (or a friend of a friend) who’s on a cleanse of some sort. However, is that what being well really about?
For a long time, I struggled trying to define what wellness is. Is it just about what we eat? If I only eat salads for the rest of my life, does that mean I’m living a well life? Can the practice of yoga, meditation and kale chips guide me down the yellow brick road? Is physical health the only thing to be considered?

The concept of being well has always been very convoluted. While modern society has started to put more emphasis on eating healthy and even sleeping more, there's still a bit left to be desired. After a lot of soul searching, (and I mean A LOT) I’ve come to realize that wellness is really about a level of content that is rarely prioritized in the modern culture. It is the act of eudaemonia. If we look at what’s considered to be ‘healthy’ behavior, we’d see things like ‘eating clean’ or using ‘clean’ products .. etc., most of these behaviors ultimately makes life miserable. As adults we're taught to tough things out, however, this “what doesn’t kill us will make us stronger” mentality often throws off the balance required to live a well life. And the reason being that tough mentality often resorts to extreme measures which throws off the key element of wellness.
The key to a well life is balance. Everything in moderation. The good, the bad and the ugly.
Only through balance will we be able to live to our fullest biological potential. From a scientific standpoint, there's a reason why our bodies can't stand eating the same-old, single ingredient dish every day. It's because our bodies are complex, heterogenous machines that require a variety of different things to function properly. When something happens to throw off that #balance (#sleeping too little or too much, eating too little or too much, too much stress, not enough stress... etc.), our #bodies will try to right the anomaly by sometimes overcorrecting.
But seriously, what is wellness?
#Wellness is essentially a balancing act that can potentially lead us to the #eudaemonia state of contentment.
